Mozambique still struggling with aftermaths from January storms
Mozambique, Society, South Africa — By AfricaTimes on February 11, 2012 2:21 pmIn January the tropical depression “Dando” and cyclone “Funso” hit southern and central Mozambique. The Deputy Justice Minister Alberto Nkutumula, reported that the death toll had risen from 37 to 40 and estimated that 119 000 people have been directly affected by the heavy rains, winds and flooding.
Five accommodations centres in Maputo City are open for people whose homes have been destroyed. These accommodations are now home to 459 people, who are waiting to be allocated new land and new homes.
Needs such as food is allocated by the government, which is supported by UN World Food Programme (WFP).
As the rain season is enfolding in Mozambique warnings are made public about the continuing danger. Heavy rain is forecasted in the coming days in the Zambezi basin, which could lead to high water levels, alarming its lower reaches, at Caia and Marromeu.
