Africa Union pressure on Guinea giunta

The African Union will put pressure on the military junta in Guinea not to run for elections aimed at ending the country’s political crisis, the bloc’s commission chief Jean Ping said.

“The Peace and Security Council affirmed that pressure should be put on Guinea to conform to agreements, especially that the junta leaders should not stand for elections the way they pledged,” Ping told reporters late Thursday.
“We will up the pressure.” Junta leader Cpt. Moussa Dadis Camara has hinted at running for president and this “causes worry,” Ping added.
The pan-African body suspended Guinea after its December 2008 coup.
The country is to hold first and second round of presidential polls in January and February next year and parliamentary vote will take place in March.
